In the 50’s, 60’s and even 70’s, independent film was synonymous with Underground film, art film, and foreign film.
Simply defined, a film that is independent is a film made outside of the umbrella of the studio without the funding or distribution options offered.

Producing a film independently has become quite popular, and this is due to the public no longer being satisfied with the Hollywood formula. The audiences of today have become much more sophisticated and expect something different and new every time they sit down to watch a film. The old Hollywood formula just doesn’t cut it anymore for entertainment. It has been too predictable for film buffs. We look for cutting edge, quirky and groundbreaking films.

However, the most important aspect of independent film is that anyone with a song in their heart and the burning desire to make a film can now do so. We have the new technologies to thank for this as well as the public’s yearning for raw footage with a gritty storyline. So this means you can achieve your dream of making a film, and you don’t have to be a big film studio to get it made. It also means that you have the joys of the financial headaches and creative challenges.

There are three main phases of making a film: pre-production, production, and post-production. There might also be a 4th phase: distribution (if you’re lucky). The longest phase of making a film is pre-production. This is also the most important part of the production, because it is what makes the film. Without good planning it will be difficult to get anything off the ground.

While you don’t really need one, it is good to have a script. So in the beginning you have to have a story, a concept, or an idea. Once you have one, you can move on to all other modes of production planning. Of course, there are several ways you can tell your story, but in filmmaking there are two main classes of film. These would be the short film and the feature length film. It is usually better to start off with a short film rather than a feature length film, and if you are a film student, you rarely have time to produce feature length films.

A professional screenplay is typically scripted for a run time of 90 minutes in three acts. Each act is approximately 30 pages long, and each page is the screen equivalent of one minute. This is a timing consideration that is more typical of the American film industry than it is of the rest of the world film making community. European films have less restrictions concerning film length. Rather, they have the tendency to let the film unfold and tell itself, allowing however much time it takes to tell the story.

Once you have written your screenplay, if you have no immediate plans for production it is best to write a treatment, which best describes the film in a nice neat three-page write-up. These three pages represent one act of your screenplay in a treatment, and is the format commonly acceptable to shop your screenplay. Very often, this is all that gets read, and can make or break your screenplay’s acceptance. However, for the independent filmmaker, all you need is a working script and you are on your way!

Film Project: So Where Do I Start?

Films460x276Alright… so you’ve decided that you’re going to try to move that project that you’ve been sitting on for far too long from the “one day” column to the “active” column of your life.  The question is what the Hell do you do now?  How do call it an active project?  What qualifies your project as something that is in pre-production?  what will make people say something to you other than “Awww!  How’s that movie hobby coming?  Any good news about your cubicle-based 401k?” Making a film is a little different from commercials like the local roofing contractors in arlington tx commercial i made in the past.

This article will assume that you are at this point of your life.  This article will assume that you are a certain type of person who, odds are, has spent a lot of time over the years with a part of them wanting nothing more than to make a movie.  This brings me to my personal belief that there are two words that, when uttered together and with the right tone, should be ranked among the most power phrases that can be uttered.

“The Movies” have inspired, motivated and even educated people since the 20s.  Sure, there were moving images before then but we’re only going to go back to the beginning of the big business that came to be known as “The Movies.” Let’s face it… being a member of the “glamorous” life that people associate with The Movies is pretty much at the top of most “dream job” lists.  Sure, it gets simplified to “I want to be famous” all the time, but the fact that people dream about this career path can probably be traced back to something much bigger than just fame; but I digress.  The point of this article is not the history of this business or even the people who “want to be famous.”  the point of this article is to help you understand just what it takes to get a project started.

OK… here we go… are you ready?  Here it is…


That’s it.

Ok, maybe that’s not IT, but it is the “nutshell” version of IT.  Allow me to explain.

You see, a project is only something that will never get off the ground if you never lift it off the ground.  People will never attach themselves to your project if you don’t ever ask them.  Investors will never finance a project they never hear you talk about.  Studios will never distribute a movie that doesn’t get made…

Starting to get the picture?  Simple, huh?

Say, for example, that I’ve had an idea for a movie in my head for the last 5 years and it’s a story about a boy who is coming of age and has dating issues until something makes him cool and he gets the girl in the end while, at the same time, embarrassing the school jerk.  It’s called “JERKS.”  Over the course of the five (5) years that this idea is swimming around my head, I watch movie after movie and television show after television show with similar story lines and it makes me continue to hesitate and postpone any actual action regarding “JERKS.”  Whether you realize it or not, these 5 years are your “development” of the concept.  It is, without a doubt, the most self-deprecating part of the entire creative process because it seems to be the easiest time to keep talking yourself out of making any progress for any one of ten thousand reasons.

Here is some more good news… you don’t actually have to write every idea you want to produce before you get it going.  I suppose it is at this point that I should mention the fact that my own approach is somewhat unorthodox, and may be considered by some to be a bit more “by the seat of my pants.”  However, it’s worked for me so far and even though I’m still only at the beginning of my road in this industry comparatively speaking, I’m still confident that my methods, however unorthodox they may be… work.   They don’t work because they are better than methods used by anyone else.  They work because they are about adaptation to any situation and having an arsenal of projects that can be applied across the board to any form of output with any demographic.  The more flexible you are with your Intellectual Property (IP), the easier this will be from the word go.

So… to re-cap so far… you want to finance a project and move it from dead to active… to do this you need money… to get money, you need investors… to find investors, you’re on your own, but once you have someone who will listen, I’m telling you that you don’t need anything written, drawn, shot, edited or otherwise even remotely prepared for your first meeting.  Don’t misunderstand… I’m not saying that this is the easiest thing in the world to do… and I’m definitely NOT saying that you don’t need to be prepared… I’m saying don’t prepare anything…except yourself.

The only thing you need when you sit down for your first pitch to an investor is your own conviction, confidence and the inside-out knowledge of that concept you’ve been kicking around in your head so long that nobody can possibly suggest something you haven’t thought of already… Then you just talk.  Passion really is contagious… so is conviction.  However, as with anything, there is a warning label here… an extremely fine line can be crossed very easily and you can come across as arrogant and amateur; this is the kiss of death.  EGOS WILL KILL ANY PROJECT FASTER THAN YOU CAN EVEN BEGIN TO THINK.  Leave your ego at the door.

Even before the acquisition of equipment, you need customers. Your prospects are all the businesses and homes with carpets in your area. Your problem is going to be in reaching these prospects, impressing upon them the benefits of your service, and getting them set up with an appointment for you to do the work.

We have found that the least expensive and most productive method of reaching these people is by way of neighborhood “hand-out” flyers or announcements, delivered door-to-door by Brownies or Cub Scouts, or members of other youth organizations. These flyers are advertisements or announcements of a “Carpet Cleaning Special,” printed on 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 sheets of paper that invite the recipients to call you for an appointment.

But you should set a specific date for completion of the project, and agree to pay no more than half the total estimated cost until the job is finished, and meets with your approval.

The next step is to take this original of your flyer to a printer, and have printed whatever number of copies you want to start. Most quick print shops will be able to print up to 20,000 copies, and deliver in a reasonable time, with nominal costs. If you decide to start with more than 20,000 copies, you will do better by going to a regular commercial printer. Larger quantities that would take a quick print shop all day can be handled by a commercial print shop in a few hours.

While your flyers are being printed, you should be lining up your delivery people – local Brownie or Cub Scout Troops. No big problem here. Either look up their local headquarters office in your phone book or call a friend or two with children about the right age and ask for the name and phone number of troop leaders. Arrange to pay these scout troops $10 for each thousand circulars they hand out door-to-door.

One other thing before you start handing out your flyers – be sure that you have someone available to answer the phone and set up appointments for you. It’s usually best to have a woman do this; it makes the caller think of your service as an established business. It Takes an Iron Resolve to Make an Independent Film Production Happen

Commitment is an independent filmmaker’s most valuable resource. If a person wants to get their film made badly enough, there is not much in this world that can stop it from happening.

When I first graduated from film school I hit the ground running. I landed a decent job as the Director and Animator on an independent film that had Pat Boone’s name attached to it. I was hired to film clay animation stories about The Bible. I worked on that job for about four months and was paid fairly well for my efforts. I decided that the best thing I could do with the money I saved was to make another film. I would take the knowledge and money I gained and use it for my own benefit. I decided to make my own movie with the idea in mind that I would enter it in on the film festival circuit and hopefully win some awards. If that happened it would almost certainly be a boost for my fledgling film career.

I wrote a script for a short film that involved a combination of clay animation and live action, and I was ready to make a film. My plan was to use all of my knowledge and talent and do almost all the work. For the parts that I could not do myself I would hire friends and business associates at a substantially discounted rate. These people agreed to work for cheap in return for a little creative control, a credit for their demo reel, and possibly exposure if the film does well at any major film festivals. I only had to hire them for the filming of the live action scenes and for some of the post production work (like sound design, mixing, foley sound effects, etc…). The animation I would do entirely on my own.

I contacted a couple of friends of mine that managed camera and sound equipment rental houses. They set me up with a 16mm camera package and a DAT (digital audio tape) package to rent at discounted prices. I rented these packages on a weekend (to get the extra 2 days for free) and I started filming the live action part of my film right away.

I worked extremely hard that first weekend. I basically filmed most of the time with only about two to three hours of sleep each day. When I was not filming/acting/directing, I was setting up lights, moving furniture, making meals for everyone, setting up props, distributing and apply makeup, rehearsing with actors, fixing costumes, and performing script rewrites on the set, to name only a few things. By the time Monday morning rolled around, I was mentally and physically exhausted, but I still had to bring back the camera and sound equipment packages by 10:00 am or I would be charged for another day of rental. You do not have that luxury to just sleep in and not worry about it when you are making an independent film on a shoestring budget. There is no rest for the weary when you are making your own movie. Time is money, and you do not have a lot of either one of these resources.

I returned the camera and sound equipment packages just in time on Monday morning. Then I went straight to the film lab and dropped off my film. I then made an appointment for the following week (the soonest date I could get) to see my dailies (developed film), and counted the days until the day of my appointment arrived.

I arrived at the film lab a half hour early for my appointment to see my dailies. As I sat in the lobby waiting for my big moment, I began to get very nervous. Unnerving thoughts began to fill my head. What if one of the rolls of film somehow got damaged in the lab? Maybe the machine that develops the film broke when my film was running through it and all of my film rolls are scratched? What if the cameraman I hired was not as good as his demo reel implied and all my rolls are under or over exposed? What if the guy who took my film at the front desk of the film lab is a disgruntled filmmaker who only took that job so he can ruin other people’s film when they hand it over to him? What if there was a mishap in the film vault involving fire sprinklers and all my rolls of film got ruined? …

Edit the film in pieces rather than all at once. If you try to rush through editing and work on it all at once you might keep a straight train of thought going, but you are also likely to become tired and start making minor mistakes. This can be awful because it could allow you to make a tiny mistake that really pulls down the entire film. Taking your time and breaking it up over several sessions will ensure that you approach the sections with a fresh mind, and ready to really see the project. If possible, it is a good idea to wait a few days after wrapping shooting before editing so that you can approach the material fresh as well.

Your final step is actually showing the film to get feedback and taking the feedback graciously. No filmmaker ever wants to be told that their film is horrible. But if your film has problems, you should take the feedback that you are given and look at it against your film. Is the feedback good, or is it something that is just personal preference?
